A theoretical discussion of the origin of supernovae is presented with particular attention to the mechanism of type II supernovae. It is hypothesized that neutrinos produced in the core of stars and absorbed in the outer layers play an integral role; this role is described in detail and observations which both confirm the theory and provide a better understanding of supernovae are discussed.
