Radio Halos: Clusters Of Galaxies, Coma: Clusters Of Galaxies
Scientific paper
The origin of the radio halo in the Coma cluster is discussed. Particular attention is paid to the galactic wake theory: the wakes are assumed to be turbulent and able to reaccelerate particles via either first-order Fermi or the Eilek-Henriksen mechanism. The expected energetics driven from the theory is in good agreement with the observed data. The need for particle acceleration processes, especially first-order Fermi type, is emphasized. The rarity of Coma-type radio halos is considered to be due to either an insufficient particle supply or to the fact that particles in their ICM are not old (<1010y) enough to produce a halo as extended as that in the Coma cluster of galaxies.
