Venus Atmosphere: Sulfur

Results are presented of the determination of the absorption of centimeter radio waves in the atmosphere of Venus by radio occultation using the satellites Venera-15 and -16. The integral absorption of radio waves in the λ = 5 cm band at height 61 km attains -2.4 dB; at height 55 km it equals -0.6 dB; and at height 47 km it reaches -5.8 dB. Data are presented on the absorption of radio waves in the λ = 5 cm and λ = 13 cm bands for heights 40 -70 km, obtained using the satellites Pioneer-Venus and Venera-15 and -16. The absorption of radio waves is shown to be due to sulfuric acid vapor. The distribution of sulfuric acid vapor at heights 39 - 53 km is found. At heights 39 - 44 km sulfuric acid vapor concentration varies little with height, and equals 37±7 ppm. For higher altitudes above the surface of Venus from 45 to 53 km, the concentration of H2SO4 vapor decreases with height, and equals 20±5 ppm at 47 km.
