The next generation imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope (IACT), the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), will have enhanced sensitivity and improved angular and energy resolutions, will cover a broader energy range, and posses a wider field of view than the current generation of IACTs. CTA is therefore an ideal instrument for acquiring precise spectral measurements, at very high gamma-ray energies, on a large population of blazars and mapping of nearby (extended) radio sources.
In this talk we will discuss the main scientific goals to be achieved concerning extragalactic jets physics and very high energy emission of AGN, and discuss quantitative examples of the capability of CTA to achieve these objectives based on Monte Carlo simulation of its response.
