Geomagnetic storms are primarily driven by Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) and Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs). These storms enhance the Earth's ring current, an electric current produced by ions and electrons drifting around the planet. Ring current behavior during CME-driven storms is fairly well understood and can be modeled with moderate accuracy. However, CIR-driven storms produce less predictable ring current behavior. Data from Earth-orbiting spacecraft (IMAGE and POLAR) over the period of 1995-2005 are used to characterize the ring current during CIRs and to understand the magnetospheric processes involved in its development.
