The interaction between the hot ion population (ring current) and the cold plasma population (plasmasphere) in the inner magnetosphere excites various waves that cause pitch-angle and energy diffusion of the radiation belt and ring current particles. Recently, observations in the plasmasphere by IMAGE and Cluster have shown that the plasmapause itself is rather dynamic and it consists of many transient structures. These structures appear to play important roles in producing waves and wave-particle interactions. Simultaneous in situ waves and particles measurements provide the understanding of the mechanisms that lead to the loss of the trapped energetic electron populations associated with wave-particle interaction in the radiation belt and ring current region, and explore the roles that the transient structures of the plasmasphere, e.g., plumes, density structure, and plasma boundary layer, play in these processes. It is found that the outer boundary of the radiation belt is strongly modulated by substorm activities. By using the Cluster data set, the dynamic motion of the outer edge of the radiation belt can be determined. The outer edge can move inward a fraction of an Earth radius in about half hour during a moderate storm time period. Inside the radiation belt regions, the energetic particle flux is strongly modulated by large amplitude ULF and VLF Waves.
