Although N2+ is produced in large quantities in the Earth's Ionosphere, it is a minor species in the ionosphere because the loss rate is very large. It is the major source of NO+ below 200 km and a key player in both the ion and energy channels at all altitudes. The photochemistry of N2+ has been controversial since the beginning of the Atmosphere Explorer analysis in the 1970s and 1980s. Historically, model N2+ densities are typically a factor of 2 larger than measured densities. This paper reexamines the problem in the light of recent laboratory measurements of some key reaction rates.
