The Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere (AIM) satellite was launched on April 25, 2007. Its primary goal is to explore Polar Mesospheric Clouds (PMC) near the mesopause region, and investigate their formation and evolution. One of the instruments onboard AIM is the Cloud Imaging and Particle Size (CIPS), which is a four camera, wide-field (120° x 80°) UV imager designed to measure PMC morphology and particle sizes. CIPS level 1C data provides 27 scenes of PMCs per polar orbit of 1800 x 800 km field of view each, with 5x5 km pixel resolution. CIPS imagery contains a variety of cloud and wave-like structures due primary to gravity waves. In this presentation, we investigate some of the characteristics of the gravity waves imaged by CIPS during its first northern hemisphere seasonal observations. Until now, image measurements of gravity waves in the summer polar region were only possible during noctilucent cloud (NLC) displays which are limited by twilight observing conditions to latitude of 50-65°N. The CIPS imagery provides the first look at gravity waves within the summer polar cap region (>70°N). These new measurements will be compared with mesospheric gravity wave studies using nocturnal airglow emissions at lower latitudes.
