The seminal paper of Shackleton et al. (1990) provided the widely-accepted ages for the Matuyama-Brunhes (M- B) boundary at 780 ka, as well as for the principal polarity reversals of the last 2.6 Myr. The ages were derived from orbital tuning of the oxygen isotope records at ODP Site 677. As magnetic stratigraphy was not resolved at ODP Site 677, reversal ages (for the last 2.6 Myr) were imported into the Site 677 age model by correlation of oxygen isotope records from ODP Site 677 to two sites (DSDP Site 552 and DSDP Site 607) where magnetic stratigraphy is available. Since 1990, these reversal ages have not been superceded by newer higher-resolution correlations, perhaps with the exception of the M-B boundary. Coupled magnetic and oxygen isotope stratigraphies from ODP Sites 980, 983 and 984, together with IODP Site U1308, indicate that the M-B boundary does not occur in the peak of marine isotope stage (MIS) 19 but rather on the transition from MIS 19 to 18. Based on age models derived by tuning oxygen isotope records to an ice-volume model, the corresponding ages for the M-B boundary are younger than 780 ka, by about 6-7 kyr. This younger age appears to be consistent with the 10 Be flux peak in the EPICA Dome C ice core (Raisbeck et al., 2006) that has age control (EDC2) based on an accumulation and ice-flow model. The younger age is supported by Ar/Ar ages from lavas from Maui (Coe et al., 2004) but not by ages of flows carrying transitional magnetization directions associated with the M-B boundary in La Palma (Singer et al., 2002).
