An investigation is made of the small-scale structure of field-aligned currents, detected in the auroral oval using magnetic measurements from the Intercosmos-Bulgaria 1300 satellite. The characteristic transverse size of the currents ranges from 2 to 8 km and the density ranges from 0.00003 to 0.0001 A/sq m. It is shown that some of the current structures correspond to a system of 'standing' Alfven waves, evidently excited by the magnetospheric-convection instability. The size of the structure along the geomagnetic field and the magnitude of anomalous resistance are determined.
