Following an unanimous resolution at the 2003 General Assembly, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) has launched 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy (IYA2009) under the theme "The Universe, yours to discover." IAU is associated with UNESCO for this endeavor. On 20 December 2007 the International Year of Astronomy 2009 was proclaimed by the United Nations 62nd General Assembly.
IYA2009 marks the four hundredth anniversary of the first astronomical observation through a telescope by Galileo Galilei. It will be a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and culture, with a strong emphasis on education, public engagement and involvement of young people. There will be events at national, regional, and global levels throughout the whole of 2009. IYA 2009 will also highlight for the general public the on going explosion of knowledge on the universe. I will describe the main activities foreseen and emphasize the importance of this celebration for international astronomy .
