In this presentation I will highlight how our understanding of molecules in the Universe is rooted in laboratory astrophysics. Molecules are fantastic probes of their surroundings and one unique property is that their chemistry responds to the local conditions. I will demonstrate that using knowledge gained in the lab we have been able to explore the origins of water on the Earth, unlock the secrets of star birth, and gained the ability to explore relations between abiotic organic chemistry in space and the beginnings of biology.
