The ionospheric parameter "equivalent slab thickness" is the ratio of the total electron content of the ionosphere to the maximum electron density. Two methods are described for the determination of this parameter using measurements of the Faraday rotation of 108 Mc/s transmissions of Vanguard I (1958 [beta]2) combined with multistation sounding measurements of the maximum critical frequency. Results are given for five daytime observation periods of the satellite: November 1959, February, April-May, July-August and September-October 1960; during which times the monthly mean sunspot numbers were close to 100. Values of the equivalent slab thickness are found to vary from a winter minimum of 215 km in November 1959 (1500 hours L.M.T.) to a summer maximum of 305 km in July-August 1960 (1500 hours L.M.T.)E The results show the extent to which the Seasonal and/or December Anomaly in maximum electron density is reflected in values of total electron content. Mean daytime values of the ratio of the number of electrons above the height of maximum density to that below, derived from these results and from values of the parabolic semi-thickness measured at De Bilt, Netherlands, are close to 3.5 to 1 except during the summer daytime when the ratio is in excess of 4.5 to 1.
