The results of a comparison of the By component of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) and measurements of ionospheric F region neutral wind and ion drift data are reported. The neutral air was monitored in terms of the Doppler shift of the oxygen line at 630 nm, and ion motion was tracked by the shift in the oxygen 732 nm line. Attention was focused on days when the IMF By component was negative or positive around the magnetic local noon period. Ions and neutral species exhibited a westward flow when By was positive, with the neutral wind reaching half the zonal velocity of the ions. The ions moved zonally eastward in By negative conditions, accompanied by the neutral air at one-sixth the velocity. A pressure gradient in the dawn-dust direction is suggested as the cause of the slowing of the neutral air.
