Magnetosphere-ionosphere interaction in two regimes is reviewed. In the first there is no significant kinetic energy flux of energetic particles along field lines, and the classical shear Alfven wave with its field aligned currents and Poynting flux plays an essential role in the localized interaction processes. Different responses of the ionosphere for the incidence of the shear Alfven wave and ducted fast magnetosonic wave are demonstrated. In the second regime where the field-aligned kinetic energy flux of particles cannot be neglected, wave dispersion and particle acceleration are discussed. Quantitative numerical simulations of the coupling interaction are surveyed.
