Studies of energetic electron precipitation clarified the development of auroral absorption substorms on global scale. The activity begins near magnetic midnight and at magnetic latitude near 65 deg. Eastward propagation occurs at constant L shells and westward propagation towards higher L values. Substorm onset is usually preceded by activity near magnetic midnight and west of it. During the preonset phase an absorption bay moving slowly equatorward is observed, intensifying during the movement. The onset occurs at the western edge of the absorption bay. The particles causing the preceding bay are probably precipitated from the inner border of the plasma sheet. Preonset absorption is characterized by lack of short period pulsation activity. The westward propagating onsets coincide in the north with PiB and in the south with IPDP events.
