During the International Magnetospheric Study the spatial distribution of the large-scale field-aligned currents was examined with respect to interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) parameters. The role of the field-aligned currents in the dayside polar cap including their IMF By dependence and seasonal dependence was elucidated. The three-dimensional current system was studied. The nature of the substorm current system was defined. The relative location of the field-aligned currents to ionospheric parameters, was traced. Numerical simulations were used to study the dynamics of the magnetosphere-ionosphere system. The large-scale characteristics of the system under steady state conditions are known, in that the measured key parameters are mutually consistent for average date sets.
