During the data analysis phase of the IMS, electric current systems into the Earth's magnetotail were mapped. By recognizing the implications of vorticity in plasma convective flows in the magnetotail for the configuration of field-aligned currents threading the distant magnetosphere, a self consistent model was built up, in which it is inferred that auroral oval processes take place mostly on closed field lines. The finding that turnings toward the north of the interplanetary magnetic field after episodes of southward orientation trigger substorm expansive phases, enables the growth and decline of the tail magnetic field during episodes of substorm activity to be understood in terms of rerouting of the electric current systems in the magnetotail.
