Measurements of energetic particle three dimensional distributions used to infer the structure of the region of the subsolar magnetopause obtained from the Medium Energy Particle Experiment onboard the ISEE-1 and 2 satellites are reviewed. Although initial interpretations of two types of energetic particle signatures argued against the topology predicted by magnetic reconnection at the magnetopause, subsequent understanding of the meaning of these observations demonstrate that the energetic particle data are uniformly consistent with the theory.
