The problem of onset of abrupt transitions in the reconnection regime in the central diffusive region of a steady Petschek flow is examined showing that plasma microturbulence does not proceed in a straightforward manner to the evolution of the flow towards a microturbulence flash. It is possible that the canonical Petschek regime may evolve into a condition in which the dissipative sheet is not infinitesimal with respect to the dimensions of the structure. Flare triggering must then proceed by more complex processes related to tearing mode dynamics or to more global properties of the magnetic structure of the active region.
