Long-lived isotopes produced in the earth's crust by solar neutrinos are viewed as possible tools for studying the secular variations in the rate of energy production in the sun's core, and an investigation of rare isotopes that could be produced by these neutrinos is conducted. It is found that only one isotope, calcium(41), is suitable for measuring the past solar neutrino luminosity as a result of its viability for the backgrounds which compete with solar neutrinos in producing the calcium(41) and the reliability of the nuclear physics. The significance of the proposed measurement to the evidence for neutrino oscillations is briefly discussed.
