We consider a transition of a cold neutron star to a superdense pion-condensed state. The upper bound, Emax, for the energy release in such a transition is calculated using the Bethe-Johnson Iequation of state combined with pion condensate model developed by Migdal and collaborators. For the model considered this transition might occur for a neutron star of a mass 0.3 to 0.35 M⊚, depending on the assumptions about the nucleation time for the pion-condensed phase. The corresponding values of Emax range from 9 × 1050 to 2.5 × 1051 erg. It seems unlikely that a model of a neutron star collapsing to a pion-condensed configuration could provide an alternative explanation of the supernova phenomenon.
