According to the radioactive dating of lunar rocks, meteoroid bombardment and associated cratering on the moon were intensive in the first 700 million years, the so-called terra stage. This paper investigates possible variations in the intensity of the bombardment during the terra stage by analyzing the population of large (3-1000 km) terra craters and comparing it with results obtained by theoretical models. The study differs from previous ones in that it is specifically concerned with the proportion of craters that are geomorphologically young, rather than with the number density or size distribution of craters.
