The paper deals with strong nonpermanent emissions observed from two H Ly alpha experiments on board the D2A satellite. These unexpected emissions are superposed on the permanent geocoronal Ly alpha airglow due to resonant scattering of the Ly alpha solar line by telluric atomic hydrogen. The emissions were detected both above and below the satellite altitude (500 km) at latitudes between plus and minus 40 deg. The correlation observed between their occurrence frequency and the Kp index strongly suggests precipitation of particles is the source of excitation.
