Lanthanide element population patterns in deep sea basalts vary with the
degree of silica saturation of the rocks. In the olivine tholeiite
series more undersaturated examples show preferential enrichment of the
lighter lanthanides. This relationship is not displayed by the high
alumina olivine tholeiite.
