The problem of hypervelocity-impact at 57 km/sec during the fast flyby of Halley's comet is discussed. The possibilities of numerical analyses by the use of explicit finite-difference codes, the experimental techniques, and the behavior of materials under these conditions are briefly described. Based on an extrapolation of existing data, some characteristics of the bumper-layout are discussed. It is shown that additional data may be required to optimize the design of the bumper.
