A large fraction of nearby galaxies exhibit emission-line nuclei that do not appear to be powered by stars. Although labeled as active galactic nuclei, many of these sources do not display the traditional hallmarks of accretion onto a supermassive black hole. We present here the results from a sensitive search for accretion signatures in a large sample of nearby emission-line galaxy nuclei, by employing high spatial resolution Hubble Space Telescope data. The results suggest that the nebular emission seen in many such objects is not powered by accretion onto a compact central object. There are however a few interesting cases that, when observed at high contrast with the starlight in their host galaxy, reveal quasar-like broad Balmer Hα features, and we discuss them here as well.
