We show that low-mass X-ray binary analogues of all the subtypes of cataclysmic variables exist. In particular neutron-star systems such as EXO 0748-68 or X2129+470, which abruptly switch on or off, are similar to the Z Cam systems. Their mass transfer rates lie close to the boundary between stable and unstable disc accretion, and they are carried across it by variations in these rates, perhaps resulting from spots on the companion star. More complex variability is possible if disc irradiation is only partially effective. This may occur in X1705-440. .
