Scientific paper

The first space VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry) satellite, HALCA, was launched in February 1997 and opened the new field of Space VLBI. HALCA has been operated for science observations at 1.6 and 5 GHz for the VLBI Space Observatory Program (VSOP) in cooperation with many organizations and radio telescopes around the world. Many of the >100 MeV gamma ray sources detected by EGRET are targets for VSOP observations. The connections between space VLBI and high-energy X-ray and gamma-ray astronomy are important, and possible future plans after VSOP are described. .
