One of the outstanding problems in magnetospheric physics is the nature of the energy transfer processes which carry energy from the reconnection region in the magnetotail to the ionosphere. The orbit of the Polar spacecraft is suited to investigate the energy flow in the plasma sheet at radial distances of 4-7 Re. Onboard electric and magnetic field instruments measure the full three-dimensional field vectors, making it possible to assess the contribution of electromagnetic energy flow along plasma sheet magnetic field lines above the auroral acceleration region. Because of their ability to transport energy along magnetic field lines, Alfven waves have long been considered as a candidate for carrying electromagnetic energy from the distant tail to the auroral acceleration region. Recent studies based on data from the Polar spacecraft show clear evidence for the importance of Alfven waves as energy carrier during geomagnetic disturbances. This talk will summarize Polar-spacecraft-based observations of large Poynting flux from various authors. The possible ramification of the observed Alfven waves for auroral particle acceleration and the possible generation of those waves from plasma sheet activity will also be discussed.
