Since 1997 the Polar and FAST satellites have been in approximate magnetic conjunction in the high latitude auroral region several times each year. These conjuntion events represent an ideal configuration to examine the flow of energy from the magnetotail into the auroral region using Polar, and the response to the inflow of this energy in the auroral zone using FAST. Several conjunctions have been identified and these cases have been examined using particle distribution function measurements, plasma wave data and magnetometer data. Magnetotail free energy sources for auroral activity for the different events have been identified, including both electromagnetic wave and particle energy. To help understand cause and effect in the auroral region, simulations have been run modeling the region between the two satellites using observed free energy sources at Polar at one boundary and comparing the results from the simulation with FAST data in the midst of the auroral acceleration region.
