A study is made of the effects on optical satellite observations of image motion resulting from microturbulence in the troposphere. A formulation, based on theoretical and heuristic considerations as well as on limited observational data, enables the magnitued of the image motion to be estimated as a function of lens aperture, exposure time, and zenith distance.
