The ultimate goal of empirical magnetosphere modeling is to extract full information from large sets of accumulated spacecraft data, bridge the gap between theory and observations, and help answer the fundamental questions "What is the actual dynamic configuration of the distant geomagnetic field ?" and "How is it related to the variable state of the solar wind and to the ground disturbance level ?" This paper will concentrate on using the data-based models as a tool for the mapping of field lines between the ionosphere and the equatorial magnetosphere, for different conditions in the interplanetary medium and at low altitudes. Questions to be discussed: the degree of the connectivity across the nightside equatorial plane, the position of the dayside polar cusps, the dawn-dusk asymmetry of the inner magnetosphere during storms, as well as mapping inaccuracies and their main sources. The role of individual current systems and external factors in the observed dynamics of the magnetic connectivity will also be addressed. >http://www-istp.gsfc.nasa.gov/Modeling/group.html
