The feasibility of spacecraft potential control by an ion beam in the energy range from 6 to 8 keV has been demonstrated successfully onboard earlier satellites. The instrument ASPOC onboard Cluster, however, achieved a new record in operating time. The lowered and stabilized spacecraft potential proved to be extremely useful for low energy plasma measurements, since the flux of photo-electrons generated at the spacecraft surface and entering the sensors is reduced significantly. No emissions induced by ion beam interaction have been identified, but some interesting effects were observed in DC electric field data, probably related to re-distributed photo-electrons in the modified spacecraft sheath. The paper gives a summary of operations, main achievements with plasma measurements and modelling efforts of the potential.
