Data from the RAPID IES energetic electron instrument on CLUSTER II frequently covers the boundary region of the trapped inner radiation belt of 10-200 keV electrons. CLUSTER is close to a "string of pearls" configuration during these perigee passes, and RAPID IES mostly measures in time the manifestation of a steep spatial (radial) flux gradient upon entering and leaving the trapping region. These regions were initially chosen since they are an idea testbed for the inter-calibration of the IES sensor; however this investigation has yielded many trapping boundary traverses that exhibit a surprising degree of structure beyond that due to a simple spatial gradient. In this paper we investigate these structures in more detail, using both the geometry of the CLUSTER constellation and gyro-probing techniques from each individual spacecraft.
