Numerous studies carried out by the International Solar Terrestrial Physics program have demonstrated that global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations are invaluable for linking measurements made by multi-spacecraft missions. Although the multi-point measurements from Cluster can provide information on a finer scale than that resolvable by MHD models, global simulations can be used to establish causal relationships between local measurements and the global dynamics of the magnetosphere. We present the results of several studies based on recent Cluster passes through the dayside magnetopause and the cusp. These case studies use magnetic field and plasma parameters measured upstream of the bow shock as input to the simulations and include both typical and extreme solar wind conditions. We demonstrate how comparing local data streams from the simulations with time series measured by the Cluster spacecraft provide information to reconstruct the global topology and dynamics of the dayside magnetosphere during the events.
