Dynamical change of the magnetotail in the course of substorm intensifications is studied based on Cluster observations. The energy stored in the tail is released in the form of explosive flows in the midtail region where the Cluster apogee is located. Because of the high inclination orbit, Cluster observes enhanced convection and associated thinning of the plasma sheet, dipolarization, and flow events at different latitudes. In this paper we study the energy storage and release process by analyzing substorm intensification events at different latitudes. Using multi-point observations from the four spacecraft, we determine the scalesizes of the transient and localized fast flows at different latitude.
