2724 Magnetopause, Cusp, And Boundary Layers
Scientific paper
Four spacecraft Cluster data from a high altitude cusp crossing on February 13, 2001 are presented. The cusp is identified as a seven minute long depression in the magnetic field, associated with perpendicular ion heating and a high abundance of He+. The entry through the magnetopause occurs through a very rapid outward motion, while cusp exit into the lobe is through a boundary that is retreating tailward at a few km/s. After exit from the cusp, three of the spacecraft see a single cusp-like signature in field, and two signatures in the plasma data. Timing measurements indicate that this is due to cusp-like regions detaching from the rear of the boundary, and moving tailward. The magnetic field in the cusp is highly disordered, with no obvious relation between the leading and three trailing spacecraft.
