2788 Storms And Substorms
Scientific paper
Recent global MHD simulations of the magnetosphere have demonstrated the ability of such models to reproduce many aspects of substorm behavior, as well as some characteristics of storms. In particular, the simulations reveal an interesting behavior when strongly driven by southward IMF. Under such conditions the MHD simulation appears to transition from the loading-unloading behavior typical of substorms to a directly-driven behavior reminiscent of storms. During these strongly driven simulations, a quasi-steady reconnection region appears to form in the mid tail. While substorm-like behavior (such as episodic increases in the intensity of the nightside westward electrojet) may occur during such periods, these variations are due to variations in solar wind input, not an unloading of previously stored flux. This leads us to a unified model of storms and substorms based on the characterisitics of energy dissipation in the tail and provides a framework for interpreting a variety of storm-time phenomena, such as the development of both asymmetric and symmetric ring currents.
