The formation of thin current sheets is recognized as a ubiquitous feature of plasma sheet structure and dynamics. Recent results from analytical theory shed new light on the potential structure of thin current sheets and the actual formation process from solar wind-generated boundary perturbations. Using kinetic simulations, we investigate the formation and structure of thin current sheets in a direct comparison with theory. Particular emphasis is on the distribution of current density both perpendicular and parallel to the magnetic field, and on the generation of Hall-type electric fields. Electric fields of this nature facilitate the formation of strong electron current sheets. Finally, we will use simulation results to study the transition to dynamical evolution and the onset of magnetic reconnection.
