The fine structure of arc dynamics in the vicinity of the near-polar edge of the auroral oval during breakup is investigated on the basis of experimental data on 12 auroral substorms. It is shown that the observed scheme of the motion of auroral arcs toward the pole is adequately explained by a model which identifies each microbreakup with a magnetic-reconnection impulse in the magnetotail.
