Scientific paper
The study of comets is surveyed with attention to comet structure, orbit, composition, and origin. It is suggested that comets were formed in the region from which they now appear to come, that a halo of comets as envisaged by Oort exists, and that the comets themselves are solid icy-conglomerate bodies on the lines of Whipple's model. Factors influencing the brightness of comets are considered, and the need for visual determinations of magnitude is indicated. Other topics include gas and dust production by comets, tail and coma structure, differences between short-period and long-period comets, the association of comets with Jupiter, changes in comet periods, and changes in comet structure over time.
