A method based on the spherical harmonic analysis developed by Gauss is employed to study the geomagnetic variation field at a fixed Universal Time (UT) on solar quiet days. The method makes use of interpolated data from contrived or 'ghost' stations in the Southern Hemisphere, where real stations are sparse. Furthermore, equatorial and polar stations are eliminated from the data sample in order to avoid distortion of the harmonic analysis by inclusion of the steep variations recorded at equatorial and auroral regions. Results of the harmonic analysis suggest a regular and an occasional component in the UT variation; the former may be due to ionospheric dynamo action, while the latter perhaps has its origin in the magnetosphere.
