Recent research with NASA's Wind and the European Space Agency (ESA)/NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft suggest that fast moving eruptions can collide and merge with slower moving previously ejected solar material. Three Earth-directed CMEs launched while Active region 9415 moved from S21E31 at 2001.04.06_19:30 UT to S23W09 at 2001.04.10_05:26 UT. The series of events provide a chance to study the interaction between fast and slow CMEs. We first infer the source location, angular width and line-of-sight speed for the three Earth-directed CMEs using our cone model of halo CMEs developed recently, confirming that the later launched 2001.04.10_05:30 (2001.04.09_15:54) halo CME is indeed able to overtake the earlier launched 2001.04.09_15:54 (2001.04.06_19:30) halo CME; then estimate the time when these halo CMEs arrive at the L1 point based on their initial speeds and the experienced curve between initial speed and travel time (Gopalswamy et al., 2000); finally examine ACE observations of solar wind plasma and interplanetary magnetic field to find out the counterpart of these halo CMEs at the L1 point and their interaction. It is concluded that the 2001.04.11_14:00 very severe geomagnetic storm with long duration was caused by overtaking and compressing of the earlier launched CMEs by the later launched CMEs, and that the 2001.04.10_05:30 halo CME with X2.3 flare accompanied contributes slightly to the storm because of its northward orientation.
