Reasons are discussed for the poor agreement between laboratories measuring sulphur isotope ratios: 1. (1) A memory effect, due to slow flushing of SO 2 from the mass spectrometer inlet line, causes isotope ratio differences to be underestimated. 2. (2) The neglect of second order terms in the equations correcting for oxygen isotope interference in the SO + or SO 2 + mass spectra causes estimated isotope ratio differences to be in error. The magnitudes of the correction factors are likely to vary between laboratories. Such corrections are not necessary in SF 6 mass spectrometry. 34 S values obtained in this laboratory using SO 2 are linearly related to those obtained using SF 6 .
