The Odin research satellite launched in February 2001 carries two instruments, one of which is the Optical Spectrograph and Infrared Imaging System (OSIRIS). The Optical Spectrograph (OS) measures the atmospheric limb spectrum from 280 nm to 800 nm, every 1 - 2 seconds with a spectral resolution of 1 nm. During July-August 2001, OSIRIS was operating in both mesospheric and stratospheric modes where it made a continuous limb scan at a constant angular velocity over the altitude range 70 km - 100 km, and 6 km - 60 km respectively. During the northern summer the day side orbit of Odin basically covers the northern hemisphere, while in the northern winter it covers most of the southern hemisphere so that it is possible to study the summer mesosphere in both hemispheres. This paper presents some initial results from images obtained with OSIRIS during July - August 2001 that clearly show the presence of PMC's over the northern polar region between 82 N and 41 N. In an effort to minimize the impact of significant baffle scattered light from the Earth surface and tropospheric clouds we have limited the spectra to only a few wavelengths in the UV part of the spectrum. For these wavelengths the upwelling radiation from below 45 km is completely screened by ozone absorption. This approach has allowed us to obtain a "true" PMC brightness, relative to the Rayleigh background, and to infer some details of the PMC particle size distribution. Odin is a Swedish-led satellite project funded jointly by Sweden (SNSB), Canada (CSA), Finland (Tekes) and France (CNES).
