A value is derived for the solar photospheric iron abundance on the basis of 40 weak IR lines between 0.85 and 2.5 microns for which theoretical oscillator strengths have been calculated by Kurucz (1974). Different calculations of the oscillator strengths are reviewed, and reasons are discussed for selecting Kurucz's values. The result, 7.57 (plus or minus 0.11), is shown to be in agreement with previously reported 'high' values, with values determined for meteorites and cosmic rays, and with chromospheric and coronal data.
