Scientific rationale for conducting an exploratory space flight out of the ecliptic plane is advanced. Possible experiments which could be carried out in such a journey are discussed to illustrate major advances that would result in knowledge of solar wind plasma, the interplanetary magnetic field, solar particles, cosmic rays, zodiacal light, interplanetary dust, and the sun itself. Two possible missions currently being studied by NASA and ESA are explained.
