Previous analytical investigations of astrophysical force-free magnetic fields are reviewed, and problems concerning the stability of force-free configurations are discussed critically. It is shown that to prove stability, it would be sufficient to prove that the potential energy of excitations is positive for any arbitrary motion of the frozen-in medium. The boundary-value problem for a force-free field is examined in relation to the trigger mechanism of solar flares, the hydrodynamic stability of force-free fields is evaluated, and the question is considered of what force-free configurations would be stable under prevailing conditions in the solar atmosphere. It is concluded that a stable force-free field is analogous to a harmonic magnetic field.
