As the first step to a microscopic determination of the solidification density of neutron star matter, we perform variational calculations for both liquid and solid phases using a very simple model potential. The potential, containing only the repulsive part of the Reid 1So interaction, together with Boltzmann statistics defines a ``homework problem'' which several groups involved in solidification calculations have agreed to solve. The results were to be compared for the purpose of checking calculational techniques. For the solid energy we find good agreement with Canute and Chitre. Both our liquid and solid energies are much lower than those of Pandharipande. We show that for this oversimplified model, neutron star matter will remain solid down to ordinary nuclear matter density.
